Three days of learning, connection and growth
The Young Riders Academy Team 2025 has officially completed its first training session at Peelbergen Equestrian Centre, marking a promising start to the season.
Led by Olympic champion Franke Sloothaak, the clinic focused on riding technique, awareness, and subtle refinements that can make a big difference in long-term performance. Riders trained in small groups with both experienced and younger horses, working under Franke’s close observation over several days.
“We had a few very nice days here. What I find most rewarding is to help riders—even those with great quality—identify the small details they can still improve. When we get the horse to respond correctly to the leg, and the rider to manage balance and activity, you can see the model of the horse begin to change. That’s when I know we’re on the right path. We’re not here to fight with the horse—we’re here to help its body move better, stay sound longer, and work with us willingly. That should always be the first goal for any rider.”

A holistic approach to athlete development
Beyond the riding sessions, the program offered a full immersion into the broader dimensions of becoming a top-level athlete.
Poppy Blandford, YRA’s mental coaching expert, guided riders in sessions on focus, mindset, and pressure management.
Emma O’Dwyer, YRA physiotherapist, worked individually with several participants, helping them understand and care for their physical condition in relation to performance in the saddle.
Participants also had the opportunity to engage in “one-to-one” moments during downtime, allowing for more personal reflections and tailored conversations with the team.
From business to branding
Another highlight of the week was a session with Zoe Osterhof, YRA 2022 graduate, who shared how she built her own business after the Academy—offering a concrete and inspiring example of life after the program.
There was also a moment dedicated to discussing communication and social media, focusing on how these tools play a key role in the life of a professional athlete today. Riders explored how to represent themselves in a way that reflects their values, performance and journey in the sport.
Looking ahead
It was a fantastic opportunity to get to know the riders better and confirm the quality we had seen during the selection phase. Their openness, commitment and potential shone through in every moment—on and off the horse.
With this strong foundation, the YRA Team 2025 is now ready to move forward, step by step, on their journey of becoming not only better riders, but more complete professionals in the world of showjumping.
